dc.description.abstractUnderstanding of the need to provide coexistence solutions for different cognitive radio systems operating in white space frequency bands, in December 2009 the IEEE 802 Executive Committee started project 802.19.1 to develop a standard for "TV White Space Coexistence Methods". This standard, published in June 2014, specifies radio technology independent methods for coexistence among dissimilar or independently operated TV band networks. In this article we present the key concepts of the IEEE 802.19.1 coexistence system, its architecture, and protocol. We also provide an example of the IEEE 802.19.1 coexistence system implementation and operation.
