Öğe Energy crisis: An actual collapse? Energy crisis and apocalypse societies in popular films(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2024) Gezmen, Başak; Gürkan, HasanThis chapter is based on the claim that the energy crisis, frequently on the agenda for the last 20 years, has become one of the main issues of print and visual media. This study discusses two films, especially in 2015 and after, in which popular narratives are based on energy and energy crisis. Energy and energy crisis are depicted in many TV series, fictional films, and documentaries in the 2000s and beyond. This study investigates how the energy issue and the pursuit of science, technology, and remedies that come up with this issue are depicted in popular narratives. In this context, the films April and the Extraordinary World (2015, directed by Christian Desmares and Franck Ekinci) and The Cloverfield Paradox (2018, directed by Julius Onah) were included in the study. The study analyzes how energy-themed films deal with the energy issue and how science, scientists, and technology act in the absence of energy. By emphasizing the importance of science, scientists, and technology, these films show that advancing in the footsteps of science and technology can offer a way out/emancipation when the world is experiencing energy supply problems.Öğe Semiotic analysis of public service announcement on energy efficiency(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2023) Gezmen, Başak; Yazıcı, MerveEnergy, as the most valuable concept of today, works with all disciplines, gains momentum, and increases all kinds of studies on energy and consciousness on the subject. The media provides the most rapid and effective awareness of energy, the requirements for efficient energy use, energy literacy, conscious use, and sustainability. At this stage, content related to all types of topics produced in the digital world gains importance. As communication is carried out with different target groups, public service announcements constitute an important place among the public affairs activities. Public relations can be defined as communication management. In this communication management style, strategic plans are made, and attitudes and behavior changes can be obtained through the target groups. It is aimed at delivering the content produced through mass media in public service announcements to individuals. The public is educated and made aware of the issues that are of concern to them. With these short announcements, information is provided on health, education, etc., and awareness is created for these issues. Public interests are taken as the basis for messages that do not have a commercial aspect and do not cover a very long time. In the study, the importance of public service announcements on energy efficiency is evaluated, and within the scope of the research, semiotic analysis will be made of the contents of the YouTube page of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources. At this point, the issues and indicators emphasized in public service announcements on energy will be analyzed.Öğe Digital activist movements for energy resources: The case of Greenpeace Turkey(Springer Nature, 2022) Gezmen, BaşakIn this study, it is evaluated energy-related Twitter posts of Greenpeace Turkey, which is one of the most important and active NGOs in Turkey. The examples of tweet contents are investigated to the popularity ranking of the twitter account made on 10.08.2021 as the Greenpeace Turkey Twitter Account Energy-themed posts. All contents shared with “energy” word, which is searched as keyword from Twitter account, is the subject of the research. In the scope of the study, it is discussed on which topics Greenpeace Turkey’s energy-related posts focus on. Moreover, it is appraised activist movements on energy issues with their results and suggestions.Öğe Acquisition of financial literacy as a life skill: A study on financial literacy awareness of students(IGI Global, 2019) Gezmen, Başak; Eken, İhsanAlongside the phenomena such as crisis, prosperity, etc., which emerged with the increase of global competition, the development of literacy levels has become critical. In the acquisition and development of financial literacy, first of all, the current situation should be determined, then the relevant policies should be developed and the literacy should be acquired through the necessary trainings to be provided. This chapter determines the relationship between the acquisition of financial literacy awareness as a life skill and the participation of the students who took the Introduction to Economics course in the Faculty of Communication at Istanbul Medipol University in 2018-2019 in the axis of survey method. Authors discuss the students' financial literacy awareness and skill in general. The chapter also gains insight into the situation of similar courses such as economics and finance to improve the perspective on financial literacy awareness.Öğe The role of environmental journalism in raising awareness on energy efficiency(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022) Gezmen, BaşakForming public opinion and education functions, which are among the functions of the media, are an issue that should be given great sensitivity today. What should be understood from media education is that the content of the broadcasts should be aimed at informing the public and meeting the information needs, rather than the direct education given in educational institutions, as well as culture, art, environment, politics, economy, etc. It is necessary to raise awareness about the issues. As human beings, we can sustain our lives by using natural resources. We provide all our needs directly or indirectly by living from nature. At this point, environmental education plans are needed for people’s well-being and survival. Today, the importance of environmental education has become very important in the development of awareness and sensitivity towards the environment in individuals, identifying environmental problems and acquiring skills for them. Creating awareness and raising awareness about energy saving in energy efficiency can also be achieved through the media. In particular, public opinion can be formed by ensuring the correct flow of information on the subject. Within the scope of the study, the role of environmental education and environmental journalism on energy and energy efficiency will be discussed, and what kind of awareness areas can be created for the problems within the framework of news and journalism briefs will be discussed in the axis of suggestions.Öğe Social reflections of renewable energy: Wind energy in Turkey(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022) Eken, İhsan; Kurt, SenaThe Renewable energy consumption is promoted nationally by various organizations and countries due to its environmentally friendly feature within the measures taken against the global climate crisis. Wind energy, which is one of the clean energy sources, can provide important environmental, economic, and social contributions. Wind power plants, which have been increased in Turkey, are causing social change within environmentalist views, thanks to the benefits. Social views on environmentalism can characterized as a driving force for development by forming the social footing for the spread of renewable energy. Thus, public consciousness is seen as with cause and effect. The environmental awareness of individuals living in Çanakkale city, where Çanakkale Wind Power Plant, one of the wind power plants producing the largest amount of electricity in Turkey, is located. The study was carried out with 591 participants by a survey method in Çanakkale. According to the results of the research, the education variable is the most important factor in environmental awareness. The place of residence of individuals is both the cause and the result of education.Öğe The true-based narrative: An analysis on John Hersey's Hiroshima(IGI Global, 2021) Taşkıran, Meliha Nurdan; Kara, MürvetIn 1946, John Hersey, an employee of The New Yorker magazine, proposed the reality of the bomb that was thrown into Hiroshima for the agenda, and interviewed six coincidental survivors in the area and published the records within the frame of a truth-based narrative form. This work, which may be considered as a product of 'literary journalism' or a reflection of 'transmedia' or a 'cross-media', is a true-based narrative in which six survivors' dramatic lives are constructed and embedded successfully. Technological developments and new areas of the digital worlds provide advantages about awareness of consumers and taken actions of them. It has become possible to get information and be aware of every subject through the media. In this sense, the media can mobilize the masses by providing correct flow of information, forming public opinion, engaging in activities that contribute to education and performing other operations. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects for mass of children are more effective about creating awareness. It will have provided an achievement for limited energy correct usage of next generations in the future by teaching and gaining efficient energy consumption, saving awareness, other precautions, and correct behavior models from little ages. In this point, CSR projects draw attention. In this study, awareness aimed for mass of children and rewarded energy saving projects made by three different corporates in Turkey will be evaluated. Within these projects’ scope, it will be discussed how responsibility campaigns realized by corporates on energy efficiency are effective for efficiency and creating awareness about savings.Öğe Students’ satisfaction with applications implemented in distance education process during the pandemic period(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2021) Gezmen, Başak; Eken, İhsanSince the COVID-19 epidemic outbreak, which occurred in December 2019 and resulted in profound changes and transformations in our lives, was declared to be a pandemic, our country has also faced numerous restrictions in a large number of areas. The differences that have emerged in all spheres of our lives also reveal themselves in the field of education and training. The gates to a brand-new digitization-focused era have opened for both instructors and students. Individuals who spend their time during the pandemic period at home are involved in the distance learning process and experience the education field on the digital world. At this juncture, education and training institutions have preferred implementing various applications. One of these most preferred applications is Teams, which is tailored for security-based teamwork and collaboration, providing audio- and video-based chat and communication opportunities. In this study, one of the quantitative research methods, the survey method, was used. Due to the pandemic, the survey was conducted over the Internet, via e-mail, and social media channels. The study population consisted of 519 students studying at Istanbul Medipol University Faculty of Communication. Due to the size of the population and the pandemic, students were selected through convenience sampling method. The aim of the study was to determine the relationship between the current satisfaction levels of the participants with using the app “Microsoft Teams” and the solution proposals to enhance the current level of satisfaction. Various hypotheses were tested within the scope of the study. Differences were particularly observed between the departments in which the students study and the medium they used most frequently to log into the Microsoft Teams application and the subheadings (customization, convenience of use, and possibility to select) that lead to student satisfaction. Differences were found between the departments that are particularly prone to online training and other departments that prefer online training (computers) to a lesser extent. Similarly, differences were also observed between users who use the Microsoft Teams app on a desktop or laptop computer and participants who logged into the application using a smartphone or tablet.Öğe Increasing customer satisfaction in strategic communication studies: Excellence awards in the transportation sector(Springer, 2020) Eken, İhsan; Gezmen, BaşakAs a partner of the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM), KalDer (Quality Foundation) annually gives Excellence Awards to companies and non-governmental organizations operating in various sectors as a result of certain criteria and studies in line with EFQM criteria. The awards given since 2013 include companies and NGOs from different sector groups. IETT (Istanbul Electricity, Tramway, and Tunnel) General Directorate, which is one of these companies, has the largest share in Istanbul’s public transportation after service transportation (Excluding Private Public Bus and Bus). IETT, which transports thousands or even millions of individuals from a certain point to a certain point every day, carries out studies to increase the existing customer satisfaction with its efforts. Within the scope of the research, it is aimed to analyze the satisfaction of individuals about IETT by conducting a face-to-face survey with individuals in transfer stations located in different regions of Istanbul (Beylikduzu, Avcılar, Cevizlibag, Zincirlikuyu, Uzuncayır, and Sogutlucesme). The transfer stations were selected from the main line stops on the IETT website. The research population consists of approximately 2 million people. Since it is not possible to reach all of these people, it is planned to conduct a survey with 829 people (351 females to 478 males) representing the population. The survey study will be randomly selected from the individuals at the transfer station. The research will be conducted between December 27, 2019 and January 4, 2020 at selected transfer stops. Three scales will be used for the study. In the research, questions in Chinomona (2013)’s “The Influence Of Brand Experience On Brand Satisfaction, Trust And Attachment In South Africa” scale, Bobâlc? et al. (2012)’s “Developing a scale to measure customer loyalty” scale and Imam (2014)’s “Measuring Public Transport Satisfaction from User Surveys” scale will be used.Öğe E-Retailing practices in mobile marketing: The case of getir application(IGI Global, 2019) Eken, İhsan; Gezmen, BaşakToday, the Internet has become a frequently-used tool in trading information, products, and services. Together with the transformations in the Internet, new media, and mobile technologies, the retail sector is also developing its service area. With the development of mobile technologies, retail giants determine the expectations and needs of their consumers in a good and fast way with artificial intelligence applications. This situation transforms it into purchasing behavior with the reflection of customer preferences on products and increasing personalization. One of the key issues in the mobile retail sector is to make the purchasing behavior permanent by ensuring the satisfaction of consumers. In the study, Getir application, a mobile marketing application was analyzed with focus group research technique performed on university students selected in accordance with certain criteria. As a result of the research, the availability, awareness, and satisfaction status of the participants on Getir application were revealed.
