Psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the barratt impulsiveness scale-brief in adolescents

Abstract

Introduction: Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-Brief (BIS-Brief) is a selfreport scale that can be used to measure impulsivity in adolescents. In this study, it was aimed to determine the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the BIS-Brief in clinical and non-clinical adolescent samples. Methods: The study included two groups of 116 psychiatric outpatients and 175 middle and high school students. For the re-test study, a small subgroup of the patient group (n=21) was re-applied BIS-Brief three weeks later. Socio-demographic data of the participants were collected. Aggression subscale of Childhood Behavior Checklist (CBCL), hyperactivity/impulsivity and anger control problems subscales of Conners-Wells’ Adolescents Self-Report Scale-Long (CASS-L), and hyperactivity subscale of Conner’s Parent Rating Scale–Short Form (CPRS-S) were administered. Results: The mean ages of the patient and control groups were 15.22±1.58 years and 15.16±1.86 years, respectively. There were 77 (66.4%) males in the patient group and 107 (61.1%) males in the control group. Cronbach’s alphas for internal consistency were 0.78 (patient group) and 0.70 (control group). Three weeks test-retest reliability was 0.64 (patient group). We found a two-dimensional structure for the Turkish BIS-Brief. The BIS-Brief scores had a significant correlation with the scores of CBCL’s aggression subscale (r=0.48; p<0.01), CASS-L’s hyperactivity/impulsivity (r=0.45; p<0.01) and anger control problems subscales (r=0.45; p<0.01) and CPRS-S’ hyperactivity subscale (r=0.21; p<0.01). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the Turkish version of the BIS-Brief is a reliable and valid measure for clinical and non-clinical adolescent samples. In addition, the results show that the BIS-Brief has a twodimensional model in contrast to the unidimensional structure of the original scale.

Amaç: Barratt Dürtüsellik Ölçeği-Kısa (BDÖ-K) adolesanlarda dürtüselliği ölçmek için kullanılan bir öz bildirim ölçeğidir. Bu çalışmada BDÖ-K’nin Türk adolesanlarda psikometrik özelliklerinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Yöntem: Çalışmada 175 ortaokul ve lise öğrencisi ile çocuk ve ergen psikiyatri polikliniğine ayaktan başvuran 116 hastadan oluşan iki grup vardı. Yeniden test çalışması için, hasta grubunun küçük bir alt grubuna (n=21) üç hafta sonra BDÖ-K tekrar uygulandı. Araştırmacılar tarafından sosyodemografik veri formu dolduruldu ve katılımcılara Çocuk Davranış Değerlendirme Ölçeğinin (ÇDDÖ) saldırganlık alt ölçeği, Conners-Wells Ergen Öz bildirim Ölçeği-Uzun formunun (CEÖÖ-U) hiperaktivite/ dürtüsellik ve öfke kontrol problemleri alt ölçekleri ve Conners Ebeveyn Derecelendirme Ölçeği-Kısa formunun (CEDÖ-K) hiperaktivite alt ölçeği uygulandı. Bulgular: Hasta ve kontrol grubunun yaş ortalamaları sırasıyla 15,22±1,58 ve 15,16±1,86 yıl idi. Hasta grubunda 77 (%66,4), kontrol grubunda ise 107 (%61,1) erkek vardı. İki grup arasında yaş ve cinsiyet açısından istatistiksel olarak anlamlı fark yoktu. İç tutarlılığı değerlendirmek için hesaplanan Cronbach alfa değerleri 0,78 (hasta) ve 0,70 (kontrol) idi. Üç hafta arayla yapılan test-yeniden test güvenirlik katsayısı hasta grubunda 0,64 olarak bulundu. Yapılan açıklayıcı faktör analizi sonucunda BDÖ-K’nin iki boyutlu bir yapıya sahip olduğu saptandı. Kontrol grubunda BDÖ-K ile ÇDDÖ’nün saldırgan davranış alt ölçeği (r=0,48; p<0,01), CEÖÖ-U’nun öfke konrol problemleri alt ölçeği (r=0,45; p<0,01) ve hiperaktivite/ dürtüsellik alt ölçeği (r=0,45; p<0,01) ve CEDÖ-K hiperaktivite alt ölçeği (r=0,21; p<0,01) puanları arasında anlamlı korelasyon vardı. Sonuç: Bulgularımız Türkçe BDÖ-K’nin klinik ve klinik olmayan adolesan örneklemlerinde dürtüselliği incelemek için geçerli ve güvenilir bir ölçüm aracı olduğunu ve orijinal ölçeğin tek boyutlu yapısının aksine iki boyutlu yapının ölçeği daha iyi temsil ettiğini göstermiştir.
