Although many benefits of breast milk and breastfeeding have been proven for both mother and baby, breastfeeding durations are well below the recommendations. This study was conducted to determine the factors affecting breastfeeding and the reasons why mothers stopped breastfeeding. In thisstudy, a face-to-face questionnaire was applied to 191 mothers who stopped breastfeeding and applied to the pediatric outpatient clinic of Medipol Mega University Hospital. SPSS 24.0 statistical package program was used in the analysis of the data. 25.9% of all the infants in this study were exclusively breastfed in the first six months. In the logistic regression analysis of the factors that may affect this situation, it was observed that using a bottle negatively affected breastfeeding alone in the first six months (p<0.05). A statistically significant relationship was found between the duration of breastfeeding and the baby's stay in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit, pacifier and bottle use, food intake before breast milk, gestational age, diet practice of the mother after pregnancy, the presence of supporters, breastfeeding intention, and duration of breastfeeding at previous birth (p<0,05). Although the mean breastfeeding period planned by the mothers was 21.84±6.27 months; it was determined that they could breastfeed for an average of 9.94±8.35 months. The most common reasons for weaning are; decrease or cessation of milk, baby's not sucking/not wanting to suck the breast, and thinking that milk is insufficient. For these reasons, a significant relationship was found between the use of bottle and pacifier with the decrease or cessation of milk, and the baby's refusal to suckle/unwilling to suckle (p<0.05). As a result; the duration of breastfeeding is related to many factors, and the use of pacifiers and bottles is one of the leading causes of discontinuation of breast milk. The support of health personnel is of great importance in maintaining optimal duration of breastfeeding, which has numerous benefits.
