The aim of this prospective clinical study was to compare the clinical outcomes of three different fixed lingual retainers in terms of their effects on periodontal health and success rate. Forty five patients between the ages of 13-25 were randomly assigned to three groups (Group 1: Bond-A-Braid®, Group 2: everStick® ORTHO, Group 3: Super-Splint) and upper and lower lingual retainers were bonded. The follow-up appointments were performed 2 weeks (Baseline=T0), 1 month (T1), 3 months (T2), and 6 months (T3) after the application of retainers. Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI), Probing Depth (PD), Bleeding in Probing (BOP) and Retainer failure were assessed at each appointment. The 6th month lingual plaque index scores were Bond-A-Braid (0.67), everStick (0.22) and Super-Splint (0.72) for the maxilla, and Bond-A-Braid (1.06), everStick (0.47) and Super-Splint (1.06) or the mandible, respectively. Upper lingual gingival index scores were Bond-A-Braid (1.08), everStick (0.76), Super-Splint (0.96) and lower lingual Bond-A-Braid (1.14), everStick (0.86) is Super-Splint (1.02). Pocket depth values ranged from 1 to 1.5 mm, and were found to be less than 3 mm in all groups. Upper lingual Bleeding on probing values were Bond-A-Braid (0.21), everStick (0.1), Super-Splint (0.2) and lower lingual values were Bond-A-Braid (0.3), everStick (0.24) and Super-Splint (0.32). Success rates were; Bond-A-Braid 86.7%, everStick 90%, Super-Splint 86.7%. The everStick® ORTHO group presented better results in terms of periodontal health. The failure rates of the retainers were similar.
