With the rapid aging of the population, there have been increases in musculoskeletal diseases caused by degenerative changes in bone and joints in humans. Osteoarthritis is one of the most common problems among many degenerative diseases. In patients with knee osteoarthritis pain, atrophy, stiffness and limitation of joint range of motion are observed. These problems limit the function of the knee and cause limitation in the daily activities of people. The main purpose of the treatment in knee osteoarthritis is to reduce pain, restore knee movements satisfactorily, maintain range of motion, and reduce hardening or deformation of joints. The purpose of our study was to investigate the effects of high intensity laser therapy (HILT) on pain, functionality and quality of life in patients with knee osteoarthritis. Fifty patients with knee osteoarthritis at Cadde Medical Center who were over 50 years of age without cognitive, communication and psychiatric problems were included in our study. Patients were randomized into two groups and both received physiotherapy and rehabilitation program for 3 weeks, 5 sessions a week. Treatment program applied was as followed; the control Group (n = 25): conventional physiotherapy and study Group (n = 25): conventional physiotherapy and high intensity laser therapy. Knee range of motion with 'goniometer', pain threshold with 'algometer, muscle strength with 'myometer'; the health status of the subjects with ek Short Form-36 (SF-36) and osteoarthritis was evaluated with 'Western Ontario & McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC)'. Improvement was observed in both groups when parameters were evaluated after treatment. When the groups were compared, a significant result was obtained in both groups before and after the treatment (p <0.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of the differences between the examined values and increase percentages. Both treatment methods benefited, but the efficacy of the treatments was not superior to each other.en_US
