Objective: This study aims to determine nursing students’ level of internet addiction.
Methods: The sample of the descriptive study consisted of 238 nursing students studying at a foundation university. The data were
collected through the "Personal Information Form" prepared by the researchers and the "Internet Addiction Scale", validity and
reliability studies and adaptation to Turkish of which were performed by Günüç and Kayri in 2010 .
Results: The average age of the students in the study was 19.44 ±1.77 and 88.2% of them were female. It was also determined that
14% of students checked their email 30-40 times a day, 31.1% used their smartphones 5 hours a day or more, 34.5% connected to the
internet mostly for social media (facebook, twitter etc). The mean score of the students from the Internet Addiction Scale was
89.87±20.60 (min:44, max:135). When the mean scores of the sub-dimensions of the scale were examined, it was determined that the
"deprivation" sub-dimension score was 32.58±8.56, "control difficulty" was 24.05±7.72, "impairment in functionality" was
15.27±5.91, and the "social isolation" sub-dimension score was 17.96±3.23. It was found that the mean score of the students according
to their gender, internet usage time and smart phone checking frequency showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.05).
Conclusions: As a result of the study, it was observed that the total average score of the internet addiction of nursing students was at
medium level according to the values obtained from the scale. In order to solve the Internet addiction problem before the students reach
the university level, it is recommended to conduct research in the lower education levels.
